I have been an honorary member of the Latvian community for around 4 years and I am always impressed by the warmth of feeling surrounding the festival of Jani.  The day is technically the day when all those named John (Janis in Latvian) celebrate but because this day is near to midsummer's day there are national holidays in Latvia and a long list of traditional activities.

We have had organised celebrations at our centre in Rowfant in past years including a church service.  It is interesting to note how the Christian church so often embraces many pre-Christian cultural traditions.  This can sometimes lead to inconsistency but I believe it is possible to celebrate Jani within Christian values and my family will be doing this at the Latvian centre near Rugby (called Straumeni) on 24 June.

Please feel free to respond in English, Latvian or even Russian.

Hi Herbie-A sense of humour is a life saver.Im thinking of a visit to your church,to find a good Latvian wife-thats not funny, thats very serious.I have some very remote Latvian connections, and find that the holy spirit, and genuine christian friends, are leading me towards you.Are there any events in the near future?grace to you, patrick buckley.

Patrick, this forum has been very quiet and so I now monitor it only rarely. Details of our church activities are on http://www.draudze.org.uk in both Latvian and English.  We have a service in our main chapel at Rowfant House this coming Sunday followed by a super lunch.  It would be good to meet you either this Sunday or any other time in the future.  This month is Latvia's 90th birthday as an independent nation.  There was a brief interruption in independence while the Soviet union ruled. regards,  David

Hi Patrick. Did I receive an e-mail from you about making a recording? I play the organ at Rofant so maybe this is possible.
